My Stay At Hippocrates Health Institute

Posted: Jun 23 2014

Memorial Day weekend of 2014, I went for a two week stay at Hippocrates Health Institute in West Palm Beach, Florida.  I had always wanted to go to Hippocrates as I had heard Dr. Brian Clement and Dr. Anna Maria Clement speak on numerous occasions.  I was familiar with their work and admired their mission and their commitment to the health and well being of all people.

The grounds are absolutely beautiful with fountains and sculpture and wind chimes in the trees.  I walked around my first few days in awe at how amazing everything looked and smelled.  Within their  50 acre property, they have a full spa with acupuncture, massage (various modalities, including Thai Massage, Soma Bodywork, Lymphatic Drainage), colonics and facials.  Also at the spa is a wonderful room called HARMONY with various healing modalities to ease pain and stress conditions.   They also have two talented and skilled psychotherapists and each guest receives an hour and half of counseling as part of their package.  Additional treatments are also included based on the length of stay.

The medical building houses nurses and a doctor that each guest consults with to review their medical history and also their blood work (taken at Hippocrates the day after arrival).  The treatments include various IV drips, hyperbaric oxygen, detox foot baths and oxygen treatments.

Throughout the day, there are lectures, various classes such as Tai Chi, Meditation, Rebounding, Water Aerobics, Walking/Running, Excursions off Campus (such as the beach).  You can be busy from early morning until early evening or you can lounge by the pool and read a book.  There are many pools throughout the property and all are non-chlorinated.   They do have a full gym with its own sauna, pool and steam room although I must admit I only went once.

My favorite pool area included a pool for swimming, a mineral pool for soaking, a hot Jacuzzi and a cold water plunge.  An infrared sauna and outdoor shower was also in this area.  Each night, I along with several other people soaked under the night sky bobbing around on noodles.  It was the most blissful way to end the day.  My morning began with a walk to the wheatgrass bar followed by an infrared sauna, which I took right on my porch.  It was a wonderful start to the day.

Another highlight was the wheatgrass bar. There are four juicers and a refrigerator which contains trays and trays of wheatgrass.  We were taught how to juice our own wheatgrass.  It was recommended that we drink two, 2 ounce cups of wheatgrass juice each day.  The “bar” was open early in the morning until late at night.  We were also served green drinks at 10 AM and again at 4 PM.  Our goal was to drink 16 ounces at each serving for a total of 32 ounces per day.  I achieved this goal and felt wonderful and totally enjoyed the ALL green drinks.

One of the most fun spots on the property was the Salon where you could get makeup applied, a manicure and/or pedicure, a haircut and also non toxic hair color.    I finally decided to get my newly sprouted grays covered and was glad I did.  The result was natural and did not hurt the texture of my naturally curly hair.

Each meal was buffet style with the most beautiful array for organic vegetables.  The variety of sprouts was impressive with clover, fenugreek, radish, beet, mung bean, alfalfa, sunflower, etc.  There were wonderful greens, radishes, cucumber, red onions, scallions, dulse, olives, avocado and mini peppers.  On different days we ate special meals like mock tuna (made with nuts), cold soups and nut loafs.  Everything was just so healthy and nutrient rich – I felt fantastic.  Wednesday was fast day if you were up for it.  I fasted on the two Wednesdays I was there with no problem.

My living accommodations were clean and aesthetically pleasing.  I had a private room with the most comfortable bed and shared a bathroom with one other person.  We also had a refrigerator, filtered water, herbal teas, a dining area and living room area.  On the porch was our own sauna and swimming pool for the people in our cluster of cottages.  Thankfully, there were no televisions and I weaned myself from my TV habit.

For two weeks I felt as if I were in Utopia.  The kindness of the guests towards one another and the kindness of the staff towards the guests was amazing.  I learned new things about health and well being and also came back feeling rejuvenated and very much detoxed.  It was healing on all levels.
